There are many different types of Cape Cod vacation rentals available to the traveler.  These include:

Motels

Motels (originally "Motor Hotels") allow you to park your automobile close to, if not in front of, your room.  Usually providing comfortable amenities, including air conditioning, motel rooms typically have daily maid service (tipping is recommended)
 

 
 

Cottages
Cape Cod cottage imageCottages are small, private houses that don't offer an abundant amount of storage space.  They are intended for relatively short stays  (3 months or less).  They do, however, offer cooking and dining facilities and are desirable for families and others who are looking to avoid a total reliance upon restaurants for all of their meals.
 
  Ebb'tide seaside cottage image Many cottages offer separate sleeping areas (bedrooms), common areas (living rooms), food preparation and dining areas, while some of the older, smaller, Cape Cod cottages and cabins may only offer one, multi-function room.  Most cottage rentals do not provide bed linens and towels and the vacationer would need to provide their own.

  Private Homes
Private home in a quiet neighborhoodAnother accommodations option is to rent a private home for one week or longer.  Many homeowners list their property with local real estate agents for vacation rentals.  Others handle the rentals on their own.  Private home rentals provide the space required for today's family.  Multiple bedrooms and the normal amenities of a home stay can be expected.  Again, bed linens and towels are usually not provided.  Be sure to check before arrival.
